Should I Write a Thank You Note for a Hostess Gift?

how to write a thank you note

Have you ever wondered if you need to send a thank you note for a hostess gift?  The answer is yes, you do. After all, the person giving you the gift went to the effort of making the purchase and putting thought into it.

Sending a thank you note for a hostess gift not only gives you an opportunity to express appreciation for the gift, it also is a chance to thank them for their presence at your party.

How nice is it to go to your mailbox and find an envelope that is hand addressed  with a pretty stamp?  Your note is a gem amongst all the newspaper ads and what not you normally find tucked into your box.

How to Write a Thank You Note for a Hostess Gift

  • A thank you note for a gift must be handwritten
  • The note needs to be only 4 0r 5 sentences (this might take the pressure off writing it)
  • Mention the gift and how you plan to use it
  • Thank them for attending your party
  • Put a stamp on the note and mail it
  • It is never to late to send a thank you note
That’s it!
Wine, flowers, homemade cookies, coffee table books and small items for their home always make good hostess gifts.  Why not consider their hobbies or taste when choosing a hostess gift?  If they enjoying being in the kitchen try to find an unusual kitchen gadget or a cookbook.  For the wine lover, maybe a themed wine stopper or cocktail napkins.  If you choose flowers, go the extra step and put them in a vase.  It doesn’t have to be an expensive vase, a mason jar will do. By putting the flowers in water the hostess does not have to fumble around and seek out a vase, cut the stems and take  care to keep the flowers fresh and alive. One of the most memorable hostess gifts I received was a hand-tied bunch of sunflowers from a friend who picked them up at a local farm along the way to my house. Plants are also a nice touch.  I still have a gernaium a friend gifted me as it was her first time at my house for wine and cheese.  The plant survived the summer  and now that it is winter and sitting in my kitchen window.
If you really want to go the extra mile, wrap the gift…..I know I know, let’s not push it!  To make it easy on the hostess, make sure you include a gift tag with your name on it.  This way the hostess knows who the gift is from.  Often times, as everyone is arriving, there is not time to open gifts. By leaving your name on the gift, it makes it very easy for the host to follow-up with you.

This is great. I honestly was always perplexed as to whether the gift was a thank you from the guest so didn’t require a thank you, but always felt unsure. Now I know. Thank you.
